On an island... Sur une ile

Day/Jour 27 - 29/06/10
Listening to the advise of a lovely man I met by the sink doing the dishes one night, we set off to Texel Island,  small island, north of mainland Holland, which he garanteed would be a little piece of Dutch paradise. He told the truth.
En faisant la vessaile un soir, un gars vachement sympa m'a dit que l'ile de Texel, au nord de la Holland, etait tres belle, meme, un petit coin de paradis Hollandais, donc nous y sommes aller. Il n'a pas menti.


 

Once one the island, we rented out a little scooter, top speed of 30km/hr. To be driven on cycle lanes (which are everywhere in this country). Sorry mum, no helmets required (and none available)...
Une fois sur l'ile, nous avons louer un petit scooter, vittesse maxi de 30km/h. A conduire sur les pistes cyclables (y'a que ca dans ce pays). Desole maman, le port du casque n'est pas obligatoir (et y'en avais pas non plus)...

 

Thanks to our brilliant transportation method, we got to see a whole heap of this beautifull island, between sand dunnes, forests and fields... there is truly a lot to see.
Grace a notre method de transport, on a put voir un sacre paquet de cette magnific ile. Entre les dunnes, la foret et les champs... y'a pas mal a voir.

    

Texel island is home to a lot of different birds, which we chased down for a picture (by we, I mean Kathy... :)
L'ile de Texel habrite une grande variete d'oiseau, qu'on a essayer de prendre en photo (quand je dit on, je veut dire Kathy... :) 




And ofcourse... there was sheep, goats and fluffy cows... :)
Et biensure, il y avait des mouton, des chevres et des vaches poilues... :)


 

Day/Jour 28 - 30/06/10
We made our way back to the ferry, via Oudeschild, a gorgeous little fishing town on the east coast of Texel Island. There we went to the maritime museum, defo worth a look, heaps of things found on shipwrecks all around the island, old boats, newer boats and even a display of all the things found on the beach...
Nous sommes retourne au ferry, en passant par Oudeschild, un jolie petite ville de peche sur la cote est de Texel. La nous sommes aller au musee marin, ca vaux vraiment le coup, plein de chose retrouver sur des epaves autour de l'ile, des vieux bateaux, des bateaux pas si vieux, et meme un hangard plein de truc retrouver sur la plage...

   

Off to our first volunteer work typo-thing tomorrow... more to come... :)
Et c'est parti pour notre premier boulot demain... affair a suivre... :)

Day/Jour 24 - 26/06/10
Today we went to Zaanse Schans which is a reconstructed/relocated dutch village. It represents how the area looked in the 17th century. We got to see heaps of windmills, clogs and cheese making.
Aujourd'hui nous sommes allees a Zaanse Schans, ceci est un village recontruit/reloge. Ca represent comment l'endroit etait dans le 17eme. On y a vu tout plein de moulins et la fabrication de sabot et de fromage.

   

Day/Jour 25 - 27/06/10
Amsterdam - ventured into the big city by metro as it costs €5 an hour to park in the city. We wandered around the different areas of the city that was packed with people, bikes and scooters.
Amsterdam, Nous sommes allees y aller en metro car on nous a dit que ce coute €5/hr pour ce garrer en ville. Nous sommes allees un peu partout, il y avait beacoup de monde, de velos et de scooters.

 

Canals running through the city centre gives it some added charm. We hired a peddle boat and made our way around the canals, getting lost along the way but eventually found our way back. There were so many boats and houseboats lining the banks of the canals and much movement of boats on the water so we nearly got cleaned up a few times.
Les canaux qui se trouvent partout dans le centre ville lui donnent un certain charme. Nous avons louer un pedalo, et nous nous sommes balader un peu partout, et nous nous sommes perdu aussi... Il y avait plein d'autre bateaux sur les canaux et des "maisons bateaux". Beaucoup de mouvement, on a faillit couler 2, 3 fois...


 

We went to the red light district but because it's daylight saving time it wasn't dark so activity was no doubt quieter, you would have to stay in the city until at least 11:00pm to see all the neon lights, etc.
Nous sommes allees au "Red Light District" (y'a une traduc en francais ?), mais vu qu'il fait jour jusqu'a 23h, y'avais pas encore trops de "monde".

 

The heat is almost unbearable here at the moment but on the upside our tans are looking good.
La challeure est presque insuportable ici en ce moment, mais bon l'avantage c'est qu'on bronze tout bien comme il faut.

Day/Jour 26 - 28/06/10
After a long day in Amsterdam yesterday our feet were still sore and the heat is unbearable, not much sleep because of it so we decided to leave late from our campsite and go up the coast to our next campsite. We are now in Petten, off the coast of the North Sea. We wandered down to the water which was very nice and went back to enjoy the sunset.
Apres une longue journee a Amsterdam hier, on avait encore mal au pieds. Et comme il fait vachement chaud, on a eu du mal a dormir, donc on a decider de partir tard de notre camping et d'aller vers le prochain, en ce moment, on est a Petten sur la cote de la mer du nord. Nous sommes allees nous promener le long de la mer, et nous y sommes retourner pour le coucher du soleil. 


    

Windmills and Bicycles... Des Moulins et des Velos.

Day/Jour 20 - 22/06/10
Started the day with a sleep in and (home made) pancakes for breakfats, it's a hard life. Then decided to hire a bike because Holland is so flat and easy to ride, until Karine decided a tandom bike would be good. Hmmm it was a lot of teamwork and a lot of fun in the end. It's easy to cover a fair distance in a short amount of time. A relaxing day in beautiful sunshine.
On a commencer la journee par une grasse matinee et des crepes (maison) au petit dej, on a franchement pas une vie facile. On a ensuite decider de louer des velos, mais j'avais vu qu'ils avaient un tandom... c'est mieux quand meme... Kathy etait pas du meme avis. Mais bon, apres un demarage un petit peu difficile, un peu de travail d'epuipe, on s'est bien amuser. C'est tellement plat que c'est facile de couvrir une bonne distance en un rien de temps. En tout, une bonne journee repos sous le soleil.

   

Day/Jour 21 - 23/06/10
Managed to find a town in Belgium called Boom, decided to visit since it was named after the Boom family name, hahaha. Ikea just happened to be on the way and we all know how nice those Ikea lunches are and not to mention the Ikea waffles. Then headed to Antwerp, a big city with old trams still running through the streets, wandered the main city area. We then headed to Rotterdam direction where our GPS landed us on not one but two no entry roads, came across the huge Esso fuel plant which was quite interesting. Staying the night just out of Rotterdam called Rockanje.
Par hazard, on a trouver une petite ville en Belgique qui s'appelle Boom, et comme, apparament (dit Kathy), c'est nomee apres la famille Boom, on est aller voir... :). Ikea etait sur la route, pis tout le monde il sait que les restos Ikea c'est bon comme tout, et sans oublier les gauffres Ikea (et oui madame... bienvenu en Belgique). Ensuite nous somme aller a Antwep, une grande ville avec des vieux tram qui roule encore, on y a fait un petit tour. Nous sommes ensuite aller dans la direction de Rotterdam, et notre super GPS nous a emmener 2 fois dans des culs de sac, mais bon, un d'entre eux etait une enorme usine Esso qui etait pas mal interessante. On passe la nuit dans un blede pas loin de Rotterdam qui s'appelle Rockanje.

      

Day/Jour 22 - 24/06/10
Rotterdam today, as it was completly bombed to the ground during WWII, most of its buildings are quite new-ish, which was a big change to what we have seen so far. The rotterdam harbour is one of the biggest in the world, therfore we have seen a lot of boats... :) and most of Rotterdam's bridges are ones that can open.
Aujourd'hui Rotterdam, comme la ville a presque ete completement detruite pendant la 2eme guerre mondial, la mojorite de ses batiment sont "neuf", ce qui a ete un grand changement comparee a ce qu'on a vu jusqu'a present. Le port de Rotterdam est un des plus grand du monde, donc on a vu plein de bateau... :) et la majorite des ponts de Rotterdam sont des ponts qui souvrent.

     

Day/Jour 23 - 25/06/10
Today we went on a ramdon drive, which led us to the beautiful Gouda (yes like the cheese). We walked around its narrow pedestrian streets and canals, eventually fell upon a cheese shop, we got to try several ones, including an apost green one with basil... :) we settled for a "plain", yet gorgeous one.. We bought gouda in Gouda... :)
Aujourd'hui nous sommes aller nous promener au pif, et sommes tombees sur la petite ville de Gouda (oui comme le fromage). Nous nous sommes ballader dans ses petites ruelle et le long du canal, puis nous avons trouver un marchant de fromage ou nous avons put essayer tout plein de sorte de gouda, meme un de la couleur de notre camion au basillic... :) On en a acheter un bout du nature, mais tres bon.. On a acheter du gouda a Gouda.. :)
