Fishes, Sweets and Walls... Des Poissons, Des Bonbons et Des Murs... :)

Day/Jour 98 - 08/09/10

Today we went to the Hull aquarium... The child's first trip to an aquarium. Even saw a saw fish (hihi), it was rather cool...
Aujourd'hui nous sommes aller a l'aquarium de Hull... C'etait la premiere fois que Fany etait aller dans un aquarium. On y a meme vu un poisson scie, c'etait plutot cool...


   

After our sea life encounter, we headed towards the city of York. Stopping by the Humber Bridge on the way, the 5th longest suspention bridge in the world.
Apres notre rencontre avec le monde sous-marin, nous sommes aller a York. Nous nous sommes arreter vers le Pont Humber en passant. Le 5eme plus long pont suspendu du monde.

 

We took a nice walk alongside the city walls and checked out the castle and Clifford's tower which stands high over the city.
Nous nous sommes ballader le long des murs qui entourent la ville et avons jeter un coup d'oeuil au chateau et la tour de Clifford qui domine la ville.


     

We went to the York Minster (one of the largest in northern Europe) via the Shambles, an old medieval street, where we bought sweets. :)
Nous sommes aller a la Cathedral de York (une des plus grande du nord de l'Europe) en passant par les "Shambles" (traduc - pagaille), une veille rue medieval. Ou on y a acheter des bonbons.  :)

  

We also saw St Mary's Abbey... where we were surrounded by squirrels (yes mum... SQUIRRELS !!)
Nous avons aussi vu l'Abbey de St Mary... ou nous etions entourer d'ecureuils (oui maman... DES ECUREUILS !!)


 

Day/Jour 99 - 09/09/10
We visited a sweet factory... The John Bull Factory. It was nice to see how they made the very sweets we bought the day before in York... :)
On a visiter une usine de bonbon... L'usine John Bull. C'etait simpa de voir comment ils ont fait les bonbons meme qu'on avait acheter la veille a York... :)

  

After stocking up on sweets, we headed to Flamborough Head where we finally saw the oldest surviving lighthouse of its kind in England, dating from 1673. And also saw its newer colleague dating from 1806.
Apres s'etre remplit les poches de bonbons, nous sommes aller a Flamborough Head ou nous y avons enfin vu le plus vieux phare de son genre en Angleterre, datant de 1673. Et on a vu aussi sa nouvelle version, datant de 1806.

 

We then walked down to water level, and had a look at the impressive erosion in the chalk rock face cliffs.
Nous sommes ensuite decendu au niveau de l'eau et avons admirer l'erosion dans la crait.

 

After climbing back up to the top of the cliff, we headed north to Scarborough. Walked around the castle wall and down by the harbour.
Apres etre remonter en haut de la falaise, nous sommes parties nord vers Scarborough. Nous avons fait le tour des murailles et sommes decendu vers le port.


    

Day/Jour 100 - 10/09/10
Happy 100th day... :) We celebrated by having a chill-out day before our long trek to Scotland tomorrow. We checked out Withernsea beach where you can clearly see the severe impact that erosion has on the East Coast of England and the huge concrete walls that have been built to protect further erosion.
Joyeux 100eme jour... :) Nous avons feter ca en ayant une journee relax avant notre longue route jusqu'en Ecosse demain. Nous nous sommes ballader sur la plage de Withernsea ou l'on pouvait voir tres bien voir l'impact que l'erosion a sur la cote Est de l'Angleterre et les grand mur de beton installer pour la ralentire.

  

There is castle like towers standing here at the main entrance to the beach (which used to be where a 300 odd meter long jetty stood) and there is a lighthouse a few hundred metres from the shore line - I guess they were anticipating further erosion and decided to put it so far away from the beach.
Il y a comme des tour d'un chateau a l'entree de la plage (l'endroit meme ou il y avait une jeter de plus de 300 metre) et il y a aussi un phare a quelque 100ene de metre de la plage - je pense qu'ils prevoyaient pour beaucoup plus d'erosion. 


   

Day/Jour 101 - 11/09/10
Today we drove from England to Scotland - some 603km. On the way we stopped at Hadrian's Wall.
Aujourd'hui nous sommes allees de l'Angleterre a l'Ecosse - quelque 603 km. En chemin, nous nous sommes arrette au Mur d'Hadrian. 


 

Hadrian's Wall was once an unbroken 135km, 4.5 meter high wall from coast to coast (east to west) built in the Roman empire, AD122. There used to be forts every mile along the wall, though all there is left of those today are ruins.
Le Mur d'Hadrian fut un mur de 4,5m de haut, et de 135km, de la cote est a la cote ouest construit pendant l'empire Romain, en 122 apres JC. Il y avait des fort tout les 2km le long du mur, mais maintenant il n'y en reste que des ruines.
